There's too much to learn...
It feels like there's TOO MUCH to learn...
If you've been in tech for awhile now, you've already realized the insane list of things you have to learn...
In Data Analytics there's the core stuff like Excel, SQL, Python, and Tableau...
But any one of those could take you down a MASSIVE rabbit hole of possibilities.
I mean just in Excel you have:
- Power Query
- Pivot tables
- Pivot charts
- Dashboards
- Macros
- VBA
And a whole ton of other formulas and conditional formatting you can learn.
I'll put it this way... If you spent a year straight learning just Excel, you still wouldn't master everything it's capable of.
So what hope do we have of mastering programming languages like Python, R, or any of the new AI powered tools coming out on a weekly basis?
Well that's the thing... you don't.
Or more specifically, you can't.
But the good news is that you don't have to.
See, the ultimate skill in tech isn't a certain technology...
It's your ability to learn.
Yes, the ultimate skill is the skill of learning!
Companies might list out 20 technologies they want you to know in a job posting, but the work you end up doing might only require a fraction of them.
No, the skill that makes you most valuable is how fast you can learn a new technology.
NOT master it, but learn enough to do what's necessary.
So once you've learned the fundamentals, don't burden yourself with trying to learn every single aspect of the technologies you use.
Instead, master the ability to quickly learn exactly what you need, when you need it.
Learn how to read documentation, how to Google, and how to find answers when you get stuck.
Aim for just in time learning, instead of just in case learning.
That's the best way to make progress fast, and stand out from the crowd.
When you can pick up a new technology in hours or days instead of weeks or months, (because you've mastered the skill of learning), you become the obvious choice.
